Land Acknowledgement

As a student at Thompson Rivers University, I recognize my positionality as a learner and guest on the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc people. I acknowledge the deep history and enduring connection the Secwépemc Nation has with this land, which has sustained and continues to support their culture, community, and traditions.

My relationship with this land is one of gratitude and learning, as I benefit from the knowledge and resources that it provides. I understand the privilege of studying in this space, and I am committed to respecting the land and the people who have cared for it for generations.

Moving forward, I will continue educating myself on the history and present-day experiences of the Secwépemc people and to contribute in meaningful ways to reconciliation, both in my actions and through supporting Indigenous-led initiatives on campus and beyond.

Myself

My name is Ritchie Liu. I am from China and have been living in Canada for 8 years.

My journey in education began with my bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Harbin Normal University between 2004 and 2008. I then spent three years teaching high school mathematics in a public school in Hangzhou, guiding students from Grade 10 to Grade 12. In 2012, driven by a passion for education and innovation, I founded Si Teng Education Consulting Co., Ltd., providing after-school academic support to elementary students in Hangzhou.

Seeking new perspectives in education, I moved to Canada in 2017, where I earned a Master of Education and am currently completing a Bachelor of Education, with certification expected by June. Throughout my academic journey, I have engaged in diverse educational roles, including Teaching Assistant, Writing Center Tutor, and Research Assistant, contributing to academic publications and instructional development. My research was published in 2022 with my thesis supervisor Dr. Handford. Additionally, my role as a tutor at VPEA (Vancouver Public Education Alliance)—a North American branch of Shanghai Yuanbo Education Group—has allowed me to support international students in IELTS, senior English, and mathematics (Grades 10-12), further strengthening my cross-cultural teaching abilities from 2018 until now.
